Personaly I think that a Pentium 4- or an AMD equivalent- based computer will be good for many many years. Even my 1 GHz Pentium 3 desktop one with 256 MBs of SDRAM is capable of most of the tasks that a computer is called to do today, it isn't the same with i486 and Pentium or Pentium and Pentium 2 where the differences were important.
Perhaps the problem is that we are never satisfied with what we have. It is the same as with cars. The bigger the maximum speed the better the car is rated. But who and in what road will run at, lets say, 200 km per hour? In this way we can neglect things that are really important, as the contribution in air polution in the case of a car. We say that the 64 bit systems support 16 TB of physical memory. Who of us will ever need or use more than 4 GBs of memory or, even more, the 64 GBs of memory that my Amilo's Pentium M with the Physical Adress Extension suports? I think that better programs- and especially games- to use this memory is what we really lack.

I'd have to 100% agree with you there. What happened to good old program optimization? To me, it seems that all this new hardware is just a excuse for some developers to bloat their software with unneeded and sloppy code wink.gif And to me, some (not all) people who buy all this hardware seems to think that having this stuff is l33t and thinks that the specs of thier PC equate to the size of *insert random part of human anatomy here*... rolleyes.gif

Just look at Vista...15GB of graphics???? Sheesh... wink.gif

Perhaps it isn't clear but when I refer to "better programs- and especially games" I reffer to the programs' and games' quality. Most of the games today are based on bloodshed and generally mindless violence. There must be something better than them, and there are a few games- like Panzer Dragoon Saga in the RPG game's field, where the evil dominates in most of them- which prove that it does.

Theres a big difference between a car that can go faster then the speed limit and a CPU which is much faster then you need for "general" useage. Your not allowed to drive the car faster then a preset speed by law, your computer can run as fast as it needs and in the end only save you time. For instance sure I dont need this opteron 165 clocked at 2.5ghz, but then again it will encode 2 hours worth video files from .avi to mpeg2 in about an 40 min or so whereas my celeron 2.0ghz (northwood) would take 4+ hours to do the same task. Sure they will both get you to the same place, but I can not only do 10:1 but I can also do something else while its workin (thanks to the dual core).

How pissed were people when you had to upgrade to 8MB of ram for windows 95??? 10 years later and 512MB of ram is the bare recommended minimum. I remember when a 10GB hard drive would never ever get filled up, now I have 440GB of hard drive space and im wanting to snatch up another 500GB SATA.

Yeah I logged into BF2 and it maxed out all the settings for it. I bought a 200 gig sata drive at fry's for $55 with no rebate needed, so I picked it up so I can keep about 800 gig's between my 3 computers running right now. 450 on the main rig, 250 on the second, and 100 on the 3rd. Now I need to find time to game a bit.

Nice to see you back Ty. I wondered if you fell off the planet or something. wink2.gif

My mistake, I apologise for my bold misintepretation sad.gif .

I agree that quality has been put aside for some games today, unfortunately. Maybe, that golden age might return...maybe when game devs realise that graphics and violence themeselves get nowhere fast, without solid and unique gameplay to back it up..I guess thats what lacking these days...

You forgot to mention the proccessors( the first must be an Intel Xeon and the second is probably also an Intel one since it supports DDR2 whistling.gif ).

Nope, the second board is an AMD Opteron Socket-F, though I didn't think those were released yet.

Some sick rigs there ZombieKIL,

Honestly... 4 gigs of ram and 1.5TB HDD space... thats one hell of a system.

You've got to have like 6,000-7,000 USD in both of those rigs.

The new Core Quadros are looking extreme.... 4 2.66 ghz cores which were overclocked to 3.1 ghz with no voltage increase. Imaggine that... 4 3.1ghz cores with 8MB L2 cache.

These things are probably going to cost a ton... well over 1,000 USD probably.

Well, personally I think that the really important thing is for somebody to be satisfied with what he has. My Pentium 3 desktop system looks very pure in front of the ZombieKIL's systems but, as far as it is up to what I use it for, it's allright for me. On the other hand, if ZombieKIL wants these 4+ GBs of hard disk space( which however I have to say that I wonder with what and in what extend will be filled up unsure.gif ) it is his right to have them as far as he can afford them( and he hasn't stolen the money of course biggrin.gif) .
