Installation requires reboot

Hi,

I try to install the trial version of Alcohol (1.9.5.4212) but after the first question regarding SPTD (or something) it tells me that Windows has to be rebooted. After the reboot the installation starts again, but the reboot didn't solve anything as the installer requests to reboot again on the exact same point. Even in safe-mode it keeps asking for a reboot.

As I am unable to post an system-report, I hope the following information is sufficient, otherwise feel free to ask.

The system runs Windows XP Profesional x64 and is up-to-date with Windows service-packs and hotfixes, according to MSBA 2.0, but the drivers can be a lil' old though.

You should be able to open up Alcohol from its installation directory to get the system report before you click reboot. This may shed some light on the conflicting drivers.

Hi There,

I'm having the same problem. It just keep wanting to reboot and when it boots back up, it just tells you to rebbot again to continue the install and then it starts all over again.
It does not even have an install directory to look for any reports.

Whats going on ?

Thanks for your quick response. But unfortunately there is no executable in the temporary installation-directory. It contains the following files:

Or, if you meant the program-directory I have to dissapoint you 'cos setup doesn't get that far that it asks for a directory name and extracts files to that location.

Maybe you can send me the program or have a suggestion of an similar tool of another brand that is able to provide the same information you need.

if you check version # of the trial you will notice that is an older version than the latest that supports x64, but i could be wrong.

Thanx you are quite right I checked it out the trial is 4212.
4327 is the one that supports XP 64

Try to manually remove Alcohol and reinstall it again:

Delete the Alcohol's installation folder, the sptd.sys, sptdxxxx.sys and vaxscsi.sys files in your Windows\System32\Drivers folder and all the relative keys from your registry( search it using the words "vaxscsi" and "sptd" as keywords). When you have finished reboot and try to install Alcohol again.
If you can't delete any keys check their permisions for them and their subkeys- the Administrators must have Full Control, if they don't give it to them and then try to delete the key. Some of this keys have subkeys that can be seen and deleted only after a reboot- then you'll be able to change the permisions and delete them and their parent keys.
If after this procedure you still can't install Alcohol try to wipe every key related to it from the registry searching it with "Alcohol" as keyword, reboot and try again.

Thanks for your replies and thinking along.

If I go to the download page and select the 'Download' icon in front of "Download from Free Downloads - Fast (1.9.5.4327) All Windows operating systems", I am directed to an free-downloads page that offers version 1.9.5.4212. And there is no other option available.

So if you are right, then it would mean that I cannot try the program on an x64 OS. And I am not that stupid to buy shareware without trying it. I have just tried the software on the W32 platform and it works fine. I do like the software but as I am working with the x64 version 95% of the time, it is useless for me unless I get an working installation on the x64 platform.

I guess I have to wait until version 4327 becomes available.

Nah, to UNINSTALL something you have to INSTALL it first... and THAT is the problem. There is no installation folder and the three files you mentioned do not exist. I didn't tried the registry, but I don't think those files are registered yet.

Regarding x64 compatibility, Alcohol has supported x64 since version 1.9.5.3823. So yes, version 1.9.5.4212 supports x64 as well.

Have a look at the registry in case thre is something. By the way, do you have the AMD Dual Core optimizer installed in any case( since you have an AMD X2 proccessor)? If yes then that is your problem: It is not compatible with Alcohol.

Hi again.

I do not have an AMD X2, just a plain single core AMD64.

Regarding the registry, I removed all the SPTD keys I could find and their Cfg-subkeys. The effect was that after a reboot my profile could not be loaded. After logging of the temporary profile and logging on again, the profile was restored and the setup started again. But unfortunately it asked for a reboot again. So I checked the registry and found that the sptd keys were restored. And not only that, they also have an 'security' and an 'enum' subkey.

I could not find any vaxscsi keys at all.

So this did not help and I thought that if the SPTD keys prevent Alcohol to be installed and those keys are restored by Windows upon reboot... maybe I am able to install Alcohol between removing those keys and the reboot. But alas, I got a message from the SPTD setup saying: "Failed to oped service key." (no I did not make a typo).

My guess is that Alcohol is x64 compatible, but SPTD isn't.

Looks like I was right. The trial-version of Alcohol is shipped with v. 1.24 of SPTD. Thanks to google I found this topic here: http://forum.alcohol...showtopic=23803

Now I installed v. 1.25 and I got a message: "You have to restart for the changes to take effect" and after the reboot I could install Alcohol.

Thanks anyone for helping me with this issue. Especially Charalambos for pointing me into the right direction.

You probably had the MS Kernel patch installed which broke compatibility with v1.24 of SPTD. v1.25 fixed the compatiibility issue. I, of all people, should have thought to mention that sooner. I'm glad you got it sorted out, though.

No problem. It just took a bit longer. The only thing is that I do not trust Alcohol-soft very much now. IMHO you should always provide the newer versions of your software. Especially if you know that an older version can cause problems. So I hope the software keeps running flawlessly.

And yes, I probably have the Kernel patch installed, as I keep my Windows patchlevels up to date. I already said that in the start-post. But I provided so much info (a huge system-report) that I am not surprised you missed that.

The latest version of Alcohol (1.9.5.4327) does include the SPTD 1.25 installer. Unfortunately, there was a glitch and the trial version download server was displaying 1.9.5.4212 instead. That has since been corrected.
