My relative is planning to renew the old desktop computer and wants to know whether AMD or Intel is better. I do not know what to comment except that Intel offers Core2 Duo and AMD offers AMD64x2.

Which one is better? Is Core2 Duo much dearer? Is AMD going to issue a new generation? Is it necessary to buy 1066MHz/1033MHz RAM to match with the processor's FSB? Is double cores one really necessary?

Furthermore, currently only the 8 series of Nvidia match with DirectX 10, but 88xx seem to be extremely dear. How about the others like 82xx? Are they good enough? What about the 7 series which are without DirectX 10? Should ATI be considered?

Thanks. smile.gif

That is a very volatile question. Performance wise, Intel currently has the fast chip with their Core2 Duo. However, I still believe AMD has the better bang-for-the-buck.

As for Nvidia vs. Ati, that's another volatile question. Ati's new R2xxx series do not compete with Nvidia's high end 8800 series cards. But it sounds like you don't want to go ultra high end anyway. The 8800GTS 320MB card is a good value/performance card.

Thank you Jito. smile.gif

I know this sort of questions are hard to answer, that is why I try to get some idea here.

88xx is really dear, maybe a single core processor will save some money. sad.gif

I`ve got an AMD X2 3800+, its energy efficient and it plays games very well. However, it does help if you have a good graphics card and the one that I won will do me very well indeed; when it arrives.

I have always used AMD chips, simply because they are indeed better bang for the buck. If you`re a gamer on a budget like I am then AMD is the route to go. AM2 motherboards are relatively cheap, but don`t skimp on the memory.

And by the way. Hello again to all the old crew.

I keep popping up and popping out and disappearing after a few months.

Thanks for the advise. smile.gif

I have checked prices about the main board, processor, etc., and found that AMD series will be around HK$1000 (US$130) cheaper.

It is nice to see you again. welcomeani.gif It would be even nicer if you came more often. wink.gif

For the difference in price the AMD dual core would be better then a single core. Normally the price difference is so small but the performance gain of the dual core is greater.

Nope, not rich. You gonna call me lucky, but, I actually won it on the Gamshadow site. A copy of Overlord came with it too. As soon as they`ve posted my picture on the site, I`ll put up a link and you can all see what I look like in my pyjamas.
