Yes, I know this is a long shot. But hey, I`m on a budget remember.

Remember me, anyway.

My new graphics card arrived today, and I`m well chuffed.

Thing is, its too long to fit in my case. So, what I`m asking is.

Where can I get a case, cheap, that is big enough to fit it in.

Either that, or its a case (pun not intended) of getting the dremel or the hacksaw out and cutting out a little section in the hard drive enclosures. That will work, but, I might mess it up, although it is less hassle than getting all the bits out and transfering it over to another case.

Anyone got a spare old big case they can let me have, I`m willing to pay for postage?

Ideas welcome.......

What dimensions do you need?

I got an old case or 2 n the closet, your more then welcome to them, but I live across the pond from you. Postage would be a might expensive I think, but they are yours if you want.

Keep in mind that even if you go the dremel route, you'll still need to pull all the parts from your system. You don't want metal shavings on your components, potentially shorting something out when you power it back up. As for replacement cases, the Apevia X-Discovery or the X-Cruiser are both decent cases that could fit that video card. They're not exactly "budget" cases, but they're decently priced (at least around here anyway).

Moreover, even though you can manage to 'create' extra space to fit your display card, the empty space in your case will be too small. Remember that it is Nvidia 8800, that is extremely hot indeed. Your hard disc drive will be too near the display card, and it is not a good idea to affect the hard disc drive which contains valueable data.

My friend once owned Nvidia 5xxx and used it in a rather old case, the computer hung very often because it was too hot inside. Therefore the case had to be always open to let the air flow across. My friend at last could not stand it and bought a new case, the problem was then solved.

You may also note that a new case comes with more and powerful fans which improve the overheat problem a lot. If you buy a new case, you should consider a bigger one, not only for allowing more air flow, but also for space to hold more components in future, so that the current situation, ie not enogh space to hold your display card, will not appear again. smile.gif

I agree with the dremel thing. If I cut it up I got to take everything out. And its not going to be very cool in there. Although my hard drive will be away from the back end of the card its still gonna get hot because my cpu runs at 49/55 degrees on idle, I don`t want it to get any hotter.

Well Shawn_nee, if it costs around a tenner for you to send me a case which the 8800GTX will fit into I`ll send it to you via paypal if you`ve got a paypal account. I can only afford a tenner. The wife you see, she nags a lot mind.

I once bought a nice dalmation covered case from Ebuyer for a tenner on special offer, that was huge!! That would have been nice.

I suppose I could go down to our local recycling tip and see if they`ll let me walk away from one of the old towers there, except they are always grey and drab and look like they`ve come from a dingy school somewhere.

You know what its like, you`ve got £400 quids worth of graphics card just sitting there in the box and you can`t use it. Its eating me up man, I wnat to play Oblivion with all the sliders on full. I want to play Call of Duty 2 with the highest settings, I want to make my mate jealous as heck (because at the moment he`s laughing at me).

Keep the ideas coming, I`m still thinking the dremel route may be a good temporary way to go.

Where you living anyway Shawn_nee....

His profile says "Austin Texas" therefore I reckon it'll cost more than a tenner to send a case from the US to the UK sad.gif

Yes, I did it. I installed my graphics card at last. I didn`t take a dremel to it, I took everything out and drilled it with my high powered hand drill. You should see it, a massive hole in the hard drive enclosure. As soon as I take pics I`ll post em up. As for cooling, well, the side is off for now. I`m going to save up for a new case, a good one.

And believe it or not I forgot to change a setting in the Bios, and ended up thinking I damaged the card. I sweated over it all day, came home and remembered to change it. Alls fine so far.

And its running with my 400W 17A Jeantech, crappy PSU!!!!!

I`m gonna play Oblivion with all the settings up now, and I`ll let you know if I blow my PSU up.....

I gorra 8800gtx, nyer nyer nyer nyah

Oh yes! Geforce 8800 consumes much electricity too. Hope that your power supply is powerful enough for it.

Anyway, congratulations! biggrin.gif

Thanks. You`re all good people. And I managed to play Oblivion at the highest resolution with all settings up, and it was really smooth. I`m gonna get Fraps and see how smooth it was. But I consider it a job well done in the end.

Don`t worry about power, I`ve got a 550W PSU coming from Ebuyer soon, that should stop me from biting my nails. I`ve also left my computer on overnight while downloading something and I wasn`t woken up by a loud bang; so I think my PSU is okay.

Just for giggles I put in to see what it would cost to ship a 5 pound case to you and it ran over $100.

I had to work on a system in a Lian Li case once. I must say I wasn't impressed. I don't know the model, though. It had two twisting knobs to release the side-panel. Perhaps that was just a bad example of their work, but it didn't leave a very good impression.
