I recently installed Alcohol 120% on my vista, and as soon as it got done installing, the system crashed and shutdown, now when I try to startup I get a blue screen as it is loading the startup icons, and I can't disable automatically restarting and safe mode crashes BEFORE it even loads desktop, the only thing I can get from the error is

STOP 0x00000005e (0xC0000005, 0x81c90722) and 0x9B3E7A68

I can't do searches or uninstall alcohol or anything, did I install and outdated version that doesn't support vista, what do I do?

What version did you install?

Can you boot up in safe mode and uninstall Alcohol? Also have a look in the C:\Windows\Minidump folder for the latest minidump and attach it here so we can isolate what is causing the BSOD.

Try to boot using the "Last known good configuration" option.

Thanks booting to the last known good config worked, and I thought I installed the latest version for Vista but I could be mistaken

The latest version of Alcohol is 1.9.6.5429, you can try installing that.

I downloaded the trial version today and am having very similar problems. The error message I am given is:

STOP: 0x0000007E (0xC0000005, 0x82090722, 0xa85BBA68, 0xA85BB764)

When I try to boot using Last Known Good Configuration the OS loads, but seems to resume installing the bad driver from where it left off once I am logged in. Is there any way to cancel or prevent this?

I've also noticed that if I boot normally, Windows runs a bit longer. Using these few extra seconds, I've discovered that I don't have the latest version... I somehow got Alcohol 120% trial version 1.9.5.3105 from one of the mirrors linked to by the main site rather than 1.9.6.5429.

I did, but to no avail. As in IronSheik's case, Vista crashes before it's loaded. Though I have been running a Linux Live CD to access some very important files of mine, so if anyone happens to know which files I need to get rid of, that might work...

Have you tried booting up using step by step confirmation? (not sure if Vista has this still), this allows you to say no to the sptd.sys file before its loaded.

Unfortunately Vista doesn't have this feature. Is the file necessary for Vista to run, though? If not, would deleting it solve the problem?

If you are unable to go to a previous restore point, boot up normally or in safe mode then you could try deleting the file. It is located in your system32 directory.

Just to make it clear: which one of the two versions you have now installed?

It depends on the version that you have installed... whistling.gif
