SPTD.sys is causing an agp440 hang on my computer. I can't boot into regular mode, safe mode, or the recovery console. I have found several sites that say all will be better if I delete SPTD.sys, but I can't figure out how to do it because I can't get in to my computer. What can I do?

Are you able to boot from a CD and get in to DOS?

Unfortunately I don't have one... I think winxp was on my computer when I got it.

You could try download a bootdisk for 2K or XP here http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm to see if that will boot your OS.

Is there any other way? The floppy drive on this(working) computer does not work, and neither does the disc burner. I could probably get someone else to make me a disc, but it would take a while. Anything in the meantime?

If both the floppy and CD/DVD drive don't work, and you can't get in to Safe Mode or recovery mode, then there's nothing else I can suggest sad.gif

Have you tried to boot with the "Last known good configuration" option?

What the BSOD says exactly? Do you by chance have the NVIDIA GeForce MX 440 (AGP 8x) graphics card( I also have it in my desktop computer)? If the "agp440" string coresponds to your graphics card then it may be the cause of the problem( either malfunction or conflict), in which case removing it (with your PC unplugged from the power supply of course) would help.

I don't get a BSOD unless I try to get into the recovery console. Otherwise it just hangs. As for the graphics card, I'm pretty sure the only problem is sptd.sys. I've read all over that agp440 is just a red herring.

Good news: I got ahold of a floppy boot disk which should solve all my problems!

Bad news: It does not. I still get a BSOD on the recovery console, and it hangs everywhere else.

Also, yes I verified that floppy drive is the first boot priority.

Does the boot disk give you a dos prompt? If it doesn't then its quite possibly not a bootable disk.

ehm.... when i start up the computer it sits there for a while with a blinking underscore before starting to boot up. I assumed it was just loading but perhaps its a dos prompt and I didn't realize it?

I would most likely give you a drive letter like C:\> and then allow you to type commands in to.

What does this BSOD say? It may be helpfull, especially in case that you don't manage to boot up.
