Kinda a hard decision... it seems that Aopen had the only 3 sheep burner anyone knew about... but Lite-On has been rock solid (espically in their Safedisk capabilities) and NEC isnt even on the list... so ill have to go with Lite-On this time round

Just wondering I have the Pioneer 108. Its a great drive for everything I want to use it for. Just wondering if someone that can tell me what sheep this drive is? Or is there a list that I can look it up in.

Thanks

I can see that the 2 top places in the poll are LiteOn on Plextor, and LiteON has a big lead. I, since recently, own DVD writers from both companies, and so far I have found no flaws with Plextor, and alrady one with LiteON. Namely, the LiteON is pretty slow when reading bad sectors. Not much, but I somehow expected better.
Plextor also seems to have a better tray mechanizm and overall look to it.
LiteON is hands down cheaper though. Seems "you get what you paid for" is true in this case.
So be warned when you make your decision.

Lite-oN, do they sale any thing else. And everyone says if you can get it at Wal-Mart it's not worth it.

Nah, even Wal-Mart can get decent electronics. They sell Linksys routers, after all. Which Linksys is now a cheap Cisco (essentially). And since Cisco is "the" name in routers, I'd say that it's a pretty good choice. I almost bought a Linksys from work (no, not Wally World), but I'm waiting for my OvisLink to die. What's an OvisLink you ask? I don't have a clue, but it's cheap and it works.

I did a little different research when choosing hardware. I've found that in the release notes of MANY programs the author strongly recommends one buy Plextor hardware. Since those kind people spend many loving hours with hardware I'll happily take that advice. Additionally MANY reviews compare BrandZ hardware to a Plextor. Since Plextor is the be-all-end-all why not buy the best? smile.gif

LiteOn drives are pretty good too, especially with SafeDisc games and are cheaper to boot as well.

I think more people voted for the LiteOn with the mindset "it's just as good". Yeah, riiight. It's kinda like a Honda CRX is just as good as a BMW M3: they're both cars.

I like plextor: it writes well on anything round.

Yep, that's what I thought when I bought my PX-708A. I paid 2.5 times as much as the equivalent Liteon or other brand but didn't mind knowing I had that "legendary" quality of a Plextor.

Six weeks after the warrant expired (approx 2 weeks ago) it stopped recognizing any type of CD, pressed music CDs, CD-R, CD-RW. Did the self-test with a blank DVD+R and sure enough, the result was a read/write error. I am not alone on this, many have the same problem. Plextor Tech Support gave me a ticket # to start the RMA process. However, RMA Support only forwarded the price list of refurbished ones since mine was off warranty. The refurbished 708A was more expensive than a brand new Pioneer DVR-108. Can you guess what my decision was? biggrin.gif

"Be all and end all?" Not a chance. Legendary quality? Not any more. Don't be fooled by hype.

It's nice to see that a member of the "support team" has a sense of humor! wink.gif

To clarify: BTC CDWRITER IDE5224 after acknowlegdement by windows. Or as printed on the label on the drive ...BCE5224IM....You know, the 2 sheep drive that puts most other (highly priced) drives to shame. The last statement was based on personal experience as I have a friend in the computer hardware business, and have had a chance to try a good number of current CD/DVD drives. Plextor who??? Premium what??? The best thing about this drive is that I got it for free from a workmate that was gonig to take the tower it was in down to the Salvation Army! Glad I told him I'd take it off his hands. Yes, it reads/writes 1:1 copies of darn near anything I put in it (doggone Tages)...this drive's capabilities may be the very reason I have no trouble backing up SD 3.2 protections without emulation...among others. I'll keep using my "Bacon, Tomato and Cheese" with no troubles whatsoever... tongue.gif This drive, paired with Alcohol 120, is what keeps my PC game collection in perfect condition. Thanks for a great product, keep up the good work! Happy Holidays...

I voted Liteon, it has served me well, but I am searching for a new all-arround drive. It has to be an excelent source-reader/burner. So far the Plextor Premiun appears to be the best candidate. The other drive is the Litey LTR-52327S but I have heard that is not a good reader and that you must pair it with LTD-166s ot other good DVD-ROMs for source-reading. My only other drive is a Pioneer DVD-ROM 106s that is not useful for reading protections but the slot system without tray is what I like of it.

What do you recommend me, the Plextor or the Litey? I don't care about the price.

Youp, just bought a Lite-ON LTR-52327S, and it's great.

I agree, Just bought the LTR-52327S last month for $24 at newegg (pretty quiet for a lite-on) and no coaster so far.

And from what 40+ customers say at newegg the Lite-On SOHW-1633S 16x DVD-+RW DL is supposed to great

It is. I've got that drive (see my sig) and I have no problems burning SD 3.20 games (Doom3, Prince of Persia: Sands of Time, etc). I love that drive.

If your talking about movies, any dvd burner will do as when it comes to dvds its the software that matters not the hardware.
