Troubleshooting steps:
1. Manually deleted Alcohol 120 folder and all registry data with "Alcohol."
2. Attempted to uninstall SPTD with their standalone installer, or install if that worked. Same problem.

To do this download the SPTD standalone Installer (http://www.duplexsec...om/en/downloads) run it and choose uninstall,
If you cannot uninstall Alcohol using the uninst.exe from the program folder simply delete the Alcohol folder
then open Regedit and navigate to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\sptd"
and delete it (you may need to change the permissions to do this including permissions forthe SPTD/cfg key).
Then try and re-install SPTD using the standalone Installer, after your Computer has re-booted
run the installer again to verify that SPTD is installed.
If SPTD is not detected and you are asked to reboot again please check the SPTD key for a r0 key
if this exists then please delete then try and install SPTD again,
once SPTD has been successfully installed you will be able to install Alcohol,
if problems persist please check the System Eventlog Viewer for any SPTD related
error messages if there are any present please send them to me including the binary bytes.

That did it. Some how missed the cfg part didn't get deleted with the rest of the key due to permission settings. Thanks. Nice to see something with a simple fix and support who can really help.

Reboot, go again to the same key, give "Full control" permission to "Everyone" for the key and its subkeys and delete it.

Go to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\sptd" and set the "Start" value to "4" (service disabled).
Reboot, go again to the same key, give "Full control" permission to "Everyone" for the key and its subkeys and delete it.
Thank you for this. I got the same problem few days ago and I can't fix it. Now I know what to do. Thanks again

Same here, what I did is recreate the Key SPTD manually, then click on properties and on all 4 users, click on Full control (if possible).
Then the installer will find the SPTD key and work.

I am a fully licensed user. It worked on my Vista Home OS, but I've upgraded to Ultimate.
I have uninstalled the STPD driver completely, examined the registry and removed any stpd keys, examined and removed any Alchohol keys, removed Alchohol from my hard disk, removed stpd.sys from the Windows folder and done a final reboot.
I can install the STPD drivers from the file "SPTDinst-v174-x86.exe" successfully.
I reboot and run it again and it shows it is installed. It even allows me to uninstall it (which I do not do now).
I've tried to install Alcohol120_retail_2.0.1.2033.exe and I still get the 'you have to reboot due to previous operation' message.
I've tried to install Alcohol120_retail_2.0.1.1820.exe with the same result.
HELP! I've run out of options and hair...

Have you tried installing in safe mode?
What are your Firewalls and Antivirus software (such as Commodo Firewall or Threatfire)?

Hi,
I have not tried installing in Safe Mode.
I am using the Firewall that comes with Windows 7 and AVG Free which I already have disabled.
Should I try the whole excercise again in Safe Mode?

Yes please. By-note, we always advice a fresh install instead of a "upgrade".

Hi, I booted in Safe Mode, and logged in an account with Administrator privaleges. I examined the registry again to confirm there was no references to SPTD and Alcohol. I re-downloaded the SPTDinst-v174-x86.exe installer and upon running it received the "Failed to find Service Key" error message. I clicked [OK] and it appeared again. I clicked [OK] and it exited. I rescanned the registry and found no reference to SPTD. I tried to run the Alcohol120_retail_2.0.1.2033.exe installer. It comes up with the language selection box. I select English. I click OK and get the "You must reboot after previous operation" message.
I've tried this in many combinations, but to no avail.
What do you suggest now?

Maybe the "upgrade" mixed up some of the permissions. Please check your permissions especially those for "services". Reboot and try again.
Hi again,
First, thanks for being patient with me and this problem.
After my last post, I rebooted the computer and tried to run the SPTD installed. This time, it started and allowed it to be installed on the computer. I ran it again, and it showed that I could uninstall it from the same interface, so I can assume that it installed correctly.
When I try to run the Alchohol installed, I still get the same message about needing to reboot.
In terms of permissions, I logged in as Administrator which gives me complete rights to the entire computer. It doesnt look like a permissions issue.
Looking forward to your reply.

Disable SPTD in registry, open registry editor (execute regedit), go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\sptd
and change "Start" to 4 (= disabled), then reboot.
After reboot open registry editor again, enable all permissions of sptd/cfg key, then delete entire sptd key, and reboot again (important).
After this second reboot re-install SPTD layer, and after required reboot software using SPTD layer.

Hi again,Another try:

and change "Start" to 4 (= disabled), then reboot.

After this second reboot re-install SPTD layer, and after required reboot software using SPTD layer.
Ok, should I uninstall SPTD first (since you want me to re-install it) and then follow your instructions?
After your reply, I will try it this evening.
Thanks again.

Did as instructed. Installed SPTD successfully, rebooted and tried Alchohol, selected English for language and then it said I needed to reboot due to previous operation.Leave as is and then try it out as described.
Any other suggestions?
