Hi

I am an Alcohol 120% Registered user for a long time, and I always can update my software version to fix compatibility issue form past to Windows 10.

But seems not this time so I decided to report the issue.

Since Windows 10 Creators Update, I have this issue with Alcohol.

This is the steps how to reproduce the issue in my case.

1.Created a ISO to mount or prepare a Disk that can use "Read sub-channel data from current disk" option in Alcohol 120% Image making wizard, I use "AcronisBootableMedia" to test this issue. It can be created by Acronis True Image 2016 app as a bootable CD/iso.

2.After mount the ISO or disk, use Image making wizard to created a .mds format file. Remember to use "Read sub-channel data from current disk" option. In this case it will created .mds and .mdf file.

3.Use archive app like Winrar or 7-zip or Windows archive feature to archive these two files to an archived file(.rar or .zip).

4.Use archive app to open this archived file.

Then I have chance to see the archive app stops responding /freezes.

It seems not all this situation have the  issue but it has very high chance to freeze archive app while the archive file contains .mds file.

Also it seems not related to SPTD, once I removed Alcohol 120% (Virtual SCSI driver),even SPTD is still installed, all are fine.

I do not know how it happens, only know if I removed Alcohol  then the issue will gone, and only (some, not all) .mds format file contains archive file has the issue. So I have to see it as an Alcohol related issue for now.

Windows 10 64bit 1703(15063.332)

Alcohol 120% 2.0.3.9902 Registered.

Thanks If anyone can take a look at this issue.

This seems to be more an archive file opening issue. Have you tested with other files than .mdf/.mds?

These facts may be sheer coincidence. Please test with other files also if you haven't done so until now.

Hi

At first I also wonder it may something wrong with archive app or hardware or damaged archive file , not Alcohol.

But whatever I test, all other archive file is fine when I am opening them. Only the archive file within .mds(with .mdf) has the issue.

And if I uninstall Alcohol then the file with mds/mdf can be opened again immediately, so it is hard for me to see it is a coincidence.

I saw the video you linked to in your PM and you are right. This is really strange, obviously something that Microsoft changed in the Creator update causes it. Since Microsoft won't probably bother about it I think this is something for the Alcohol's development team to look into.

I have tried recreating this using and regardless of whether I use Read Sub-Channel Data or not after creating an MDS then an Archive with Winrar the program freezes when trying to open both RAR files when I create an Archive of the ISO opens with no problems, I will ask our developer to look into this as to whether or not this is Alcohol related.

Could you please try disabling the Alcohol shell extension and see if that helps, which archive program are you using ?

Hi

sorry for late, I just back and read the reply.

I tried disable it but still not help.

The application I have tried:

WinRAR

7-ZIP

Windows 10 File Explorer

Only Windows 10 File Explorer is not affected by this but it only supports .ZIP format which that is not a chose.

The file format I have tried:

.ZIP

.RAR

.7z

All are the same issue.

Also, sometimes it opens file with no problem with unknown reason , but soon next time when I tried to open it again, it will still freezes anyway.

Hi,

It's a long time, Is there any hope to fix this issue?

I just tested Windows 16281(insider build) with a full clean install environment, still the same issue. So Microsoft may not change the feature which caused issue, whatever what it is(I even no idea what it is).

I can only look for Alcohol fix.

I can still use Alcohol to do most of jobs but annoying for suddenly unexpected freezes by just open a zip/rar file with mds file.

I want to report the same issue as described in the first post. In my case I am using the latest version of Winrar archiver software 5.61. The Winrar just freezes completely when trying to open archives with *.mds files inside. It does it only with *.mds files and never with other file types.

It works OK in a virtual machine without Alcohol 120% installed.

Windows 10 Pro x64 1803 (17134.320)

Alcohol 120% 2.0.3 build 10521.

This is happening to me too, on many programs that can list files (WinRAR, AirDC++, qBitTorrent, Firefox) when a file type assigned to Alcohol is shown.

Hi

It does not fix with 2.0.3.11012.

Tested with both Windows 10 1809(17663.55) 64bit and early Windows10 version.

Any thanks for reading this report.

Perhaps it is not an easy to fix issue. I am just a volunteer, I don't know more.

Just to report that the same freeze happens with R-Undelete file browser window when tried to click on the plus (+) sign next to the *.mds files. For the Winrar program when a *.mds file is inside a subdirectory within the archive and you open another file first (for example *.txt file from archive) and then navigate to the subdirectory containing the *.mds file the freeze doesn't occur. The archive is opened normally. I had a similar freeze with Firefox. When tried to open the download window it completely froze the Firefox.

there was another debugging thread for some software where they eventually found out that Alcohol is not setting the Default Icon for the file type properly such that any software that tries to grab file type icon would freeze forever. solution is to not use any file type icon from Alcohol until Alcohol team resolved this issue

if I recall correctly, proper/normal Default Icon for a file type would be path to a (DLL or EXE) file with comma follow by an offset number, but Alcohol simply put a percentage sign % or something weird like that
