A while ago we had my son's ps2 chipped, to play back-ups.
When the guy did it he told us that the laser could not be calibrated to play cd and dvd, because it's quite old, so we had to choose which way we wanted to go. As we don't watch dvd films on the ps2, we chose cd.
The problem I have now is that my son bought Hulk (ps2 game), in the dvd format, which will not play on the ps2. None of his old games are on dvd, so they all play fine, including the backups I've made.
Is there any way to copy a dvd game onto cd, or any way around this?
We are on the verge of buying a new ps2, because most of the new games seem to be in dvd format ... but this would be an expensive fix.
Any ideas?
Thanks

Without the chip that allows you to use DVD back ups in the playstation, then i feel its a lost cause, as its simply not possible to put DVD format to a CD disc.
I am not an expert but i would have thought if the PS can read and play origional DVD format games then there would be a chip available to this, you may need to look round some of the PS2 sites that deal with mod chips/swap discīs.

I find that hard to believe. The original PS2 machines came out of the box ready to play DVD games and CD games. The problem could be in the mod chip though. Can you tell me the name and model of the mod chip you have? I know of one mod chip that will only play CD backups but it wont prevent you from playing a store bought original DVD game.... If I understand you right, you are saying that since the ModChip was installed, your son can not play a game he bought or are you saying you are unable to mack a backup DVD copy that will play?

Thanks for the replies guys.
Since the ps2 was modchipped we have been unable to play any dvd's at all new or backed up, but all the cd games work.
I belive the mod chip is magic 3 and our ps2 is version 4, which is quite old.
Someone else suggested changing the laser, as the symptoms could be caused by an old or worn laser.
Looks like it's going to cost me whatever !

Yup, he tweaked your laser and that is why it won't play DVD format games. The Magic 3 is kind of a POS modchip as well. Anyways, replace the laser and all should be well again.
