im looking for a free or low cost anti virus software...what do you all use and how does it stack up to say...nortons??

AVG or Avast! are quite good. Avast! is free for non commerical use.

Norton is just a name. I'll second AVG and Avast!

I've put AVG on all the systems I have built for friends and when I have had to "clean" them as well so I would say for a basic user it's great.

Not a free sofware, but I've been using NOD32 for a while now. It's fast and finds viruses when Norton did not. I still like Norton, but for my personal machine I use NOD32.

Norton is bloatware. It uses way too much of the system resources. I was using Nortons and decided to try something better so I went to Kaspersky and I love it. It found 6 virus files on my machine that Nortons missed!

i´d have to say AVG have the Pro version for myself and for my kids the free version.

anyone ever use bitdefender? i looked up a comparison chart, and it scored higher then all the ones mentioned here...course who know who that website belongs to hehe.

I've used Avast, AVG, Norton, F-Prot and NOD32. But I can't say I've ever heard of bitdefender. Sorry.

does that clean up mall ware or adware? i scanned my systems on symantec site and it tells me i have infected files, but when it tells me what it is, its adware and malware. i have so many spyware type detectors on my system and it still isnt catching it all....

adaware...spybot search and destroy and that new microsoft one.

GL for your second issue I use a combo of Adaware and Webroot Spysweeper and seems to do me just fine. As for your AV question I believe the list is clear from wha tI have read and know of myself NOD32 Kaspersky AVG Personaly I use the Zonelabs one but to each his own. Norton nor Mcafee are really THAT great anylonger the resources are horrid. but Give the Trial of WEbroot a shot. :tbu:

gdata.de offers a product (Anti virus kit 2005) which includes both the bitdefender and the kasperky engine. It has won lots of awards. Gdata has Site in English as well. Price is 40 Euros, including daily updates for a year. My kids use the 2004 version and it works great, though hd scan takes quite long, because of double engines.

Just updated to BitDefender and it is VERY nice....... Got rid of the firewall too since BitDefender has it's own. I did some research and it is rated as one of the best.... Can not be too carefull.....

I think avast is the best free antivirus you'll find out there. I had mcafee, came with computer and I actually uninstalled it and put avast on.

PS: this forum is more active so could someone tell me if alcohol 120 works with xp service pack 2? I know it didn't work last time i installed it...

McAfee Virus Scan is now free for AOL members, not sure how good it is, hopefully I won't need to find out.

All of the forums are monitored by suppport staff, so you should get a response in any of them. In regards to your question, Alcohol does indeed work with SP2. Though when I installed it, I had performed a fresh install of XP SP2 and not an update. Some who have updated their PC to SP2 have reported issues with Alcohol.
