I have heard that AMD has purchased ATI, is that true?

If it is, does it mean that there will be only one graphics chipsets - Nvidia? blink.gif wacko.gif

AMD processor motherboards usually better match with Nvidia system chipsets, now will AMD boards use ATI system chipsets?

It's true.

It's said that AMD tries to put the graphic processor inside it's processors, so having a quicker graphic card because will work with the processor... speculations, but who knows? tongue.gif

I would imagine the GPU/CPU combos will be for laptops only. Or if they are used in desktops, it will be for lower-end systems only. There will still be ATI cards coming out, but they will be under the AMD brand name from now on. In fact, AMD has already released the ATI 690 motherboard chipset as their own. I foresee good things ahead. I've never been a big fan of ATI (mostly because their drivers weren't up to par with Nvidia), but I might just change my tune now that AMD and ATI have merged together.

Old news really, those CPU/GPU combinations are code named fusion and probably wont see the light of day until end of 2008 or beginning of 2009.

I really liked the Nforce 4 chipset, but you probably won't be seeing any more AMD boards with Nvidia chipsets anymore since AMD bought ATI.

IMO both the AMD/Intel and Nvidia/ATI battles only benifit the customer. The X2's won over that generation and the Core 2 Duo's are winning this one. Being brand loyal or even having favoritism is pointless maybe even stupid in todays world. Let them smash each others brains out to make you the winner!

I still think there will be Nvidia chipsets for AMD. It's still a lucrative market for Nvidia, and they know it. They're not about to abandon AMD just because they bought ATI. It wouldn't make much sense for them. And AMD has no plans to distance themselves from Nvidia either, in spite of the merger.

Merging graphics chipsets into processors! Level two cache has already been put into, then AMD has incorporated memory controller, now even graphics chipsets! wacko.gif A real multi-tasking processor.

I think Nvidia will go to a difficult situation. Intel owns its chipset, and now so does AMD, and AMD even owns its graphics chipsets...

Actually, it's rumoured that Nvidia may be trying to do the same thing as AMD, so they may join the CPU race.

So you mean Nvidia might sell itself to Intel? Oh, my god!

The last thing I read about that Jit was all bets were off, but they would partner up on a few projects.

Charalambos guessed what I meant. I haven't heard any further development since I heard the rumor, but that was the latest internet "buzz" at the time.

If Nvidia is going to develop its processors, then it seemly unlikely to beat AMD and Intel, and it will draw too many resources and finally affect its graphics and system chipsets.

An old story:

About eight years ago, when Nvidia was not strong in the graphics market, there were Voodoo and S3. Once S3 developed a successful product, then it wanted to expand its business by developing its own sound card, so it extracted all its resources to develop that and stopped graphics development.

Before the development of its sound card fully completed, Nvidia had issued a powerful graphic card and took a lot of S3's sales. S3 had to quickly go back to graphics development, and therefore the sound card which was later issued to the market contained problems, especially the driver, and the driver was never updated.

However, when S3 finished its new development of graphics card and issued to the market, it was too too late. Nvidia was the leader, and S3 from then went down and at last was out of the market.

Hope Nvidia will not follow that...

Ah, some mistakes in the story.

About ten years ago, S3 was the leader in two dimensions graphics card market, it had S968, S945, etc.

It then drew all its resources to start developing sound cards, but 3DFX (Voodoo was its product) appeared and issued new technology cards--three dimensions graphics cards. At the same time, Intel issued its i740 graphics cards too. These cards took a lot of the market share from S3.

After finishing its first, and last, sound card, S3 quickly went back to develop the new technology three dimensions graphics cards, and the finished product was Savage. However, it was too late, Savage did not take back much share of the market. Since then S3 was going down, and at last out of business.

What a pity! I guess that there was too little time for S3 to develop Savage. In order to let it rush to the market, S3 sacrificed some quality of Savage. However, that made S3's situation even worse; when users found that Voodoo was better than Savage in 3D cards, 3DFX won the reputation over S3.

Nvidia at a later stage purchased 3DFX, but that is another story...
