there is something I don't understand :
people are using tricks to burn this new version of securom, but probablly these tricks will be obsolet in the next version of this protection. Since apparently it is not a big problem to make an image on the hardrive, why is it not possible to copy the image (I sayed the image (mdf file), and not the data as in a 1-1 copy) on a cdr an then load this backup image in the virtual drive ? I know that somtimes images are bigger than the total free space available on a cdr, but its quite easy to compress the image to fit it on a 80 mn cd-r. (I tried to compress a mdf file of 715 mb, and I get a file of 518 mb with winrar).
this would solve this problem of making perfect copy, free up space on the hardrive and most probably also solve the problem that will appeared in the improvement that will be made in the future of this new protection.

I tried to compress an image using winrar, but when i try to decompree it fails.
To burn images on cd-r you can use 100 min cds!

well it worked for me... most probably you or the software made something wrong... but whatever... the question is not about the size of the image that can be easely solved via software or cd-r type (90-100 mn) but about the possibility of burning an image on a cd-r and loading it in the virtaul drive...
I don't see any physical reason why it can't be done, and if making an image on the hardrive is allowed by the law so it should be the same on any kind of media. So why devolopers are waiting for doing this ????? unsure.gif

Exactly. I do this quite frequently, however only if the images are less than 700MB in size (as I can't be bothered to go and buy a 100min disc... rolleyes.gif )

It is no problem to mount an image from a CD. It could even be possible to "automount" by creating an autorun.inf and by using Daemon-Tools incl. some AddOn for that - haven't tried that yet tho.

But that would be CD mastering which (currently) is not available in Alcohol - but maybe it will in the future as well... smile.gif

so that's the answer of my question: it is possible to mount an image from a cd-r according to the fact that the image fits in the cd...
its a bit strange because i think i have readen topics in this forum saying it was not possible with securom 4.8... thats why I was asking this question...
so if it is possible the next improvement in alcohol would be to reduce the size of the image (not all burners supports 100mn cd-r and these media are not so common on the market) to make it compatible with all burners and users. By the way it's a bit strange that an image take more place than the all size of the data present on the original cd... Hope developpers will hear this request unsure.gif

yeah, should be a nice feature...

Although the problem is that most CDs contain data that is already highly compressed so it is possible that it will not have too much success (e.g. I tried to compress Aquanox 2 CD2, I think, with WinRAR max compression, it was like 95% of the original size... fortunately it EXACTLY fit a CDR *g*). So I think it is really up to the Devs to decide whether this is worthwile or not to implement...

by the way, I also remember to have read about the impossibility of mounting SR4.8-images from a CD. But as I didn't believe that, I tried and had success so never mind... smile.gif

Yes!
I think it will be realised at the start of the new year!
