Hells yea... I could probably easily push that X2 3800+ to 2.5ghz with stock cooling. If AMD decides to package the new HSF with the 3800+ that they started shiping with the 165 and higher optys that would be sweet. I could OC to like 2.8ghz and pwn it up. At 2.5ghz the x2 3800+ owns a X2 4800+.

Post up your parts list

Thats sick, the build should cost you clost to 3000$ USD.

IMHO and this is my opinion...

You should go with an opteron instead of the X2... optys overclock better and have same levels of cache. Look at this link, it shows the new HSF unit their putting in with the opterons and X2's above 3800+.

That motherboard is a bit overpriced as well.. same for the 7800GT. The eVGA I want is clocked higher and sells for 265$ (after 20$ rebate). Your also getting ripped off on the ram.. have a look at gigaram mach1000 PC4000 ram. I feel the ram coolers are unecessary....

Just some thoughts and opinons, but either way that thing will be a beast.

Opterons also cost more since this last price adjustment from AMD. The reason being that they wanted to limit the number of Opterons purchased by home enthusiasts instead of by business.

I havent seen offical priceing right, but the optys were supposed to be cut by over 40% to clear out inventorys and make room for M2's.

Looks good ljug,

except that I wouldnt get an x2 4200+, your wasting about 60$. The only difference between the X2 3800+ and the X2 4200+ is 60$ and 200mhz. With stock cooling and voltages you should be able to hit 2.4-2.5 ghz stable.

Ljugtomten, your computer is really worth for being replaced. I have a similar one to yours (In fact, worse than yours wink.gif ). I had planned to renew it but somehow I had to use the money to buy a notebook. sad.gif

Im seriously looking at the opterons now, but dont know enough about them - i've been following the athelons - the largest problems are that i dont know the core model names and their timelines( which one is newest, what changed from model to model) and also how they stack up against other chips as far as performance. does anybody know a good site that has the info - or have it themselves? BTW what is the deal with the 1ghz FSB on an opty compared to the 2ghz on an X2?

You've read wrong, all the opterons and X2's have 1000mhz FSB (really 200mhz times the stock HTT value of 5 (( *2= DDR HTT value which should never go above 2000... 200*5*2=2000)) ). You probably just saw the clockspeed of the 3800+ and mistaked it for FSB... the x2 3800+ is 2.0ghz stock.

The opterons are a very good choice over the X2's.. they overclock much better and are said to made from higher quailty silicon. Theres not a whole bunch to know really....

Veince core came out with the AMD Athlon 64 3000+ and went to 3600+. Then the San Deigo core came out (double the cace of the Veince) and went from 3700+ to 4000+. The manchester X2's were next.... I think they were 3800+, 4200+, and 4600+. Then the toledos came out and they were 4000+, 4400+ and 4800+.....

If you didnt catch it above, a manchester is basically a single processor with two veince cores. The Toledo is basically two SD cores on one chip.

If you get either type of X2 always buy the slowest ones (in this case the 3800+ and the 4000+). The higher clocks are a joke, and can double the price of the chip for a speed gain you could make yourself with a modest OC.

If your an enthuisast like I am and know your going to push the cpu to the limit, it may pay you to get an opteron. Im likeing the 165 myself
