Unable to burn any CD's

I have a Dell Laptop with a NEC DVD Writer. When i try to make an image/copy a disk, after choosing the read/write options when i click on start, the program ejects the drive tray even though the disk to be copied is already in the drive. It does recognise the disc and the files contained in it but refuses to start reading. I was able to burn discs with nero earlier without any problems. Please help!
