Liteons are good, plextors are good... aside from being bad at safedisk 3.20 + this NEC has been good to me after a long time. BenQ and sony make okay drives.

Newegg has some exceptional deals on 16X +/- R / RW +/- R DL drives that do 48X CD-R and 24X CD-RW. Such a drive can be had for $29.99 + shipping from newegg and its a Lite-ON SHW-160P6S-04.

I'll probably pick on up, as this NEC is nearing a high level of burns and I dont know how much longer it'll last.

Does LiteOn provide Dos driver? I cannot find any in its web site.

By the way, I found some models of it with 20xxxx. They probably mean new drives with 20x speed.

Lite-on user too. They are cheap but great. If it burns out a new one is still cheap to replace it.

Why do you need a dos driver?

I seldom use Dos nowadays, but it is still useful for:

Updating main board's BIOS: I do not trust doing this job in Windows, DOS is far safer. I use a CDRW to store the updating programme and the BIOS, because floppy discs are not reliable.

Using Windows 98SE: I ocassionally use Windows 98SE. If I need to reinstall, I like to fdisk and format under DOS, and install from the CD.
