I am using the free version of alcohol 52% to try to play my games without the dvd. The game I am having a problem with is "Gears of War", I have scanned the disk and the copy protection software it is using comes up as safedisk version 4.81, but when I create an Image of the game using safedisk as the datatype and mount the disk I still get the message "please insert the dvd" when I try to start the game.

Not sure if it will help, but you may give it a try: go to "View" in menu => DVD/CD drive EDM system => deactivate your drives, ecept the virtual drive of Alcohol.
Just to make sure, you did install the game from the virtual drive, did you? This should be done, otherwise deinstall game cpl. ands reinstall from the Image.
If anything doesn´t function, you may tgry remaking your image (with different speeds).

I've tried all that and it still isn't working, yet it works fine with the disk in the drive.

Are you sure that you installed the game from the virtual drive( after uninstalling it if you had had it already installed)? In case that you did, do you still receive the same error message( or any other)?

Yes I have installed the game from the virtual drive every time (and how much faster it installs too!).

Command and Conquer 3 gives me the message, "Please insert the original disk in the drive instead of a backup".

Have you tried remaking the image using the slowest possible speed?

Yes, this message indicates that your image is not good enough. Try obtaining the DPM at several speeds beginining from the smallest possible one, as Zamiel says, if the game is on CD or the maximum one if the game is on DVD.
