The wife went out at the weekend Xmas shopping and came back with an Xbox for my son (notwithstanding the fact that he has a beast of a computer with a 256 MB Radeon 9800 Pro already!). My son is 8. I have no interest in consoles...

Advice would be appreciated as to whether it would have been getter to get a PS2 (in time for me to do the exchange if necessary before the big day). Grounds for advice would be appreciated along the lines of:
  • which has the better games IYHO
  • do they need to be "modded" and why?
  • can you back up the games?
Thanks guys, and have a great Xmas!

They both need to be modded.... I think it is easier to back up PS2 though.

In my opinion the Xbox is better. I think the gfx for their games out do the PS2 and they're slowly getting more titles out there, which rival the ps2 gameplay wise and ... when you tire of it, you can install linux on it tongue.gif

Over here we can hire our games out for a couple of days from our local video stores. In my experience with consoles this is a good thing as I tire quickly of repeatitive gameplay so it saves a fortune when I'll only play it a couple of times.

So therefore never backed up either an xbox or ps2 title but Tron is right, they both need to be modded. This is generally a relatively cheap process but tends to void any warranty.

OK guys, the hiring of games sounds like a very good idea, they're even more expensive than PC games (and in Australia there is an extra duty on games so new PC releases are AU$100 ie currently US$75!!!)

Can I ask the purpose of modding? What does it do and why would I want it to do what it does? biggrin.gif

Thanks guys, look forward to being told to Google....just don't have the time whilst I'm at work though!

Most games here (across the ditch) are $100 too, so it can be a costly mistake.

The purpose of modding is to allow you to play backed-up software, it provides what is lacking on your backup, without this modchip your backups will not run unless you use a bootcd and swap the disc over.

In the US we can rent PS2 and XBOX games. That way I can see what ones the kids like before spending the money! LOL...

BigTy, that is of course correct. :in: So is this modding thing software or hardware? How is it done (again I apologise for my lack of Google initiative). Xbox is currently the go.

It is a chip that has to be installed into the machine. Normally requires the machine to come apart and soldered it. There are some plug in types too.

It's ok everyone! I'll solve this problem. PS2 is better. Better games, Graphics, the whole nine yards. Microsoft should stick with the computer field not the console field.
