I am attempting to give the Windows 7 beta a whirl. I have a system that has a formatted hard drive but no OS installed. I would have burned the ISO to a DVD, but this system does not have a DVD drive (only CD at this point). The ISO is 2.2GB.

Searching online for the past hour has gotten me here. Can anyone advise whether the Alcohol can burn an ISO image to a USB flash drive, so that it is a bootable install "disk"? If yes, will the USB drive letter automatically show up in a list of available drives to burn the ISO to? Or is some special handling required?

TIA,
Dan

You know, I spent about 30 minutes looking through the available online documentation searching for the answer to my question. So, are you saying that I have to download and install the software so I can make the determination as to whether or not your software can do what I'm looking for? If yes, then I guess that's your preogative, but I'll pass. dry.gif

Sorry, I miss-read your original request (though sort of in the wrong forum, non-technical may have been more suited as no report required, then again, a technical type of question :/), it sounded like you already had Alcohol installed the first time I read it and therefore a System Report is mandatory for assistance. Alcohol cannot burn to a USB flash drive, however you should be able to extract the contents of the image to the USB drive and if your computer has the ability, boot from it.

Thanks zamiel. Do I understand correctly that, from what you are saying, if I extract all the files from the ISO, it's just a simple matter of copying those files to the USB drive? Is there any special operation required to make the device bootable? I thought there was more to it than that. I.e., files or some sort of flag set in a special area of the "volume" that tells the system hardware "Hey, I'm bootable!", that plain copying doesn't enable?

Thanks!
Dan

You may need to "alter" the drive a little, please see here: http://www.bootdisk.com/pendrive.htm
