I'm having problems getting Alcohol v2.0.0.1331 to work after a Windows 7 Upgrade. When I open the program, it tells me the virtual drives do not work because of drivers. I have tried to uninstall the program in order to reinstall it fresh, but the uninstaller gives me the message "Setup cannot validate installation." Also, it doesn't show up in Windows' "Add or Remove Programs" utility. I've tried installing it on top of the other installation, but it just goes through the initial installation screens, asks me to restart, but after the restart, it repeats the same process afterwards, and will continue to do so through as many restarts as I was willing to allow with no visible changes to the other problems mentioned.

Is there a way to uninstall Alcohol manually?

I've hidden the previous two posts. We work off a spreedsheet and sometimes it's not quite up to date. Cannot elaborate any more.

Thank you so much for reevaluating my situation, zamiel.

I went in and was able to delete the registry entry for "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\{E9F81423-211E-46B6-9AE0-38568BC5CF6F}", but was not able to find the other entries, nor the corresponding drivers in "Windows\System32\Drivers."

I double checked the instructions and am positive that I was looking in the right place. Could it be that these were the files that were deleted during the win7 upgrade and the reason that Alcohol was broken after performing it??

Thanks for the help!

Sorry, I messed up the hashes. sorry.gif

If you deleted (or not found) the elements mentioned in the post reffered by zamiel then try installing Alcohol again. If you still have the asking for install problem then download the SPTD standalone installer/uninstaller from www.duplexsecure.com, use it to uninstall the SPTD driver (installed with and used by Alcohol), reboot, install SPTD with its installer/unuinstaller, reboot again, try to install SPTD again in order to verify its proper install and if it reports that SPTD has already been installed then install Alcohol.

Sorry again, really sorry. sorry.gif

No worries, Charalambos. People make mistakes wink.gif

I figured out the last few problems, and they stemmed from SPTD. I tried to reintall alcohol and it continued to do the restart loop that I described in my first post. Then I downloaded the standalone SPTD installer/uninstaller and it didn't detect a version of SPTD, so I tried to install it... same computer restart loop. But then I found another partial solution here. I had to look at the blog comments to get that fix to work, but its now working fine. Below is an edited step-by-step guide on how to fix this problem for anyone else that needs it.

1.) Open regedit, and search the registry for "sptd." This might take a while, but you should have found at least 4 entries.
2.) Delete all folders named "sptd" and "legacy_sptd" (including their sub-folders) from the registry.
2a) If the system won't allow you to delete, just right-click the folder, and click Permissions. Ask for "Full Control" for the folder and any sub-folders.
2b) If it still won't allow you to do that, click on the "Advanced" button in the Permissions Dialog box, and find the "Owner" tab. Take ownership of the file, click ok, and you should now be able to give yourself "Full Control" in the Permissions Dialog.
3.) Now rename or delete the 'sptd.sys' file found on Windows\system32\drivers.
4.) Reboot your computer.
5.) Download the newest SPTD Layer version "http://www.duplexsecure.com/en/downloads". Install it and wait for confirmation to reboot.
6.) After reboot. Try opening the SPTD layer installer again and see if it tells you that SPTD layer is already installed. If it says so, continue on installing Alcohol 120.
