Hello, i'm an Azureus staffer. I'm posting in response to this thread. I want to clarify that it's probably not the AxShlex.dll causing the crashes, we only mentioned it on the wiki article because it's easy to identify in the crash logs since it's loaded with the java process. It's more likely that Alcohol 120% hooks into low level APIs and disrupts something in the JRE.

The problem has worsend with Sun's update from 1.6.0 to 1.6.0_01, it causes the JRE to crash in several places during execution. This isn't any code in Azureus since Azureus is 99% java and can't access low-level functionality, so it must be a conflict between Sun Java and Alcohol 120. Azureus heavily relies on fast, nonblocking IO (the java.nio package) to perform file and networking IO, this is where most problems occur with layered service providers (applications hooking into winsock). But since Alcohol 120% is not a networking application and thus has no reason to hook into the TCP/IP stack it's probably some different, but maybe related issue.

I cannot file such a report since i'm not using Alcohol 120% personally. And in the other (linked above) thread there WAS a request that Azureus staff should raise the issue themselves, and that's what i did.

I think you'd better contact the people of alcohol support at suport_team@alcohol-soft.com.

This is most likely related to the third party SPTD drivers in Alcohol we have asked their development team to look into it.

For the record, at least under XP Pro x64, I have encountered no issues with the two together. I use it fairly often for TV shows I've missed, and have never had Java or Azureus crash on me because of Alcohol.

We have dozens of java crash dumps with java 1.6.0 Update 1 and all have one thing in common: the alcohol 120% dll. Although Alcohol made problems in the past (we already identified it as a common denominator for sporadic but rare crashes) it's the 1.6 U1 situation that's really bothersome because it crashes java within seconds after startup.
Java 64 might behave differently because the 32bit and 64bit subsystems use different .dlls or whatever. But it's definitely a problem for many users on 32bit XP. We (the developers) don't know how reproducible the problem is since we don't have statistics on how many java 1.6U1 users have alcohol 120 installed and experience crashes, but in the last few weeks this has been the top support issue for us.

You misunderstand. I'm running x64 Windows, but the Java version is the standard 32-bit (since next to nothing uses the 64-bit version yet). However, I just checked and realized I was still running 1.5 update 11. I'll try installing 1.6 and see what happens.

Make sure that it's actually 1.6.0 Update 1.

At the same time, have you confirmed this yourself by installing the A120 trial on a test machine running Azureus and Java 1.6.0 U1? Or are you just going off the reports from your user base? I'm using it right now, so I don't want to update Java on the chance it doesn't work. Once I'm done using it, I'll test. Though I am interested to find out if you've tested this yourself.

No, i haven't tested it myself, but i can provide you with at least a dozen java crash logs that have java 6u1 and the alcohol .dll in common. In addition to that we advised the users to downgrade java or to uninstall alcohol and both helped. This is sufficient evidence for me that this constellation is crash-prone. Of course that doesn't guarantee that such crashes will occur on all systems, but the unusual amount (compared to other java related problems) of such reports indicates that it should be easy to reproduce.

I've just installed the JRE 1.6.0 Update 1, Azureus and Alcohol and have had no issue, however I'm not on XP, I'm on 2K, nor can I test the trial version, had to use Retail.

I just tested on my spare computer (also running XP Pro x64) with Azurues 2.5.0.4, Java 1.6 update 1 and Alcohol 1.9.6.4719 using SPTD 1.43. No errors or crashes in Java, Azureus or Alcohol.

Im sorry but i dont get this, you personaly have not tested the problem ? you are relying on user crash logs, and advising to uninstall Alcohol ? the basics of locating problems with software is to reproduce the problem on your own system, after all you have your own debugging system. If downgrading Azureus,Java 1.6.0_01 resolves the problem then there is a problem in the present version, dont get me wrong we are looking into this, but you seem to have a negative attitude to the problem... is this because its easer to have us do all the bug checking and pass the ball onto us ? it works both ways we bug check you bug check and together we try to resolve the problem, alternativly we just leave it as it is and post a FAQ to our customers with this problem to downgrade Azureus,Java 1.6.0_01

Just to add it works fine on my XP home (laptop) to. Have you contacted SUN about this issue?

Why should i?

This is ONE way to isolate a cause, another is analyzing support requests and reducing it to known problems, which we did in this case since we already had problems with Alcohol 120% in the past, although those were smaller ones.

Yes, among other things. We have a support IRC channel, there we requested from the users who were affected by the problem to uninstall Alcohol 120% (we already had trouble with it in the past) and it worked. Since then we advise to downgrade java or uninstall 120% and both work.

Downgrading Azureus does not work! And Alcohol caused problems in the past too, although they were less severe than those that arose with the current java update.

QUOTE

It seems like you don't understand how java works. Azureus runs in a virtual machine and it's not azureus that crashes with java-code caused errors but the virtual machine container itself crashes in almost arbitrary code stacks. There is nothing we can debug within azureus.

It's an issue caused by the combination of sun java and alcohol 120%.

Here are some bug reports (including java crash logs) involving java 6u1 and Alcohol 120%:

Notice that uninstalling alcohol 120% or downgrading java are verified to work by several users.

This is not necessarily true. Whilst some users have experienced issues, I would assume others have not as I have ran the two happily together on two different machines under two different operating systems and hardware sets.

It IS true, since either downgrading java or uninstalling Alcohol 120 does solve the problem. What you imply is a 3rd factor that makes the problem "setup-specific", e.g. it might be limited to a specific version range of that driver you use. But i did not rule such a 3rd factor out, hence my statement is still true.

Anyway, i don't want to be antagonistic here, it's in our and your interest to get this issue solved. If you need further information from the users to investigate this i can forward your requests to them.

I've been experiencing this problem for awhile, I thought it was a problem with the latest version of the sun VM but after reading this i uninstalled alcohol 120% and azureus now runs fine. Before uninstalling I tested JRE 6, JRE 6 update 1 and JRE 7 and experienced the VM crash with all of them.

Hi. I am a HotSpot VM developer and I am going to investigate this regression. Can you please provide more details about the systems that you use to reproduce crashes.
1) 64 or 32 bit Windows XP
2) What CPU?
3) Do you get this crashes while actively using Azureus or Alcohol120 or while it is idle?

Thanks,

Ivan Krylov
